Over 1000 Fans Come Out to the Season Opener

Wausau, WI May 24th, 2010 – Over 1,000 people filed in to State Park Speedway Thursday night for the 2010 season opener and the first race under new owners Ron and Scott Wimmer.  “I think the first night was everything we could have hoped for and more,” says Scott Wimmer, “We had awesome fans, great racing, and fantastic fireworks, it was a great opening night.”

Phil Malhouf kicked off the night with a win in the Snap On Mini-Mod feature.  It looked as though it would be Randall Wilhorn or Jack Doe who would take the checkered flag, but the two tangled on the final lap bringing out the caution and sending them to the back.  That handed the lead over to Malhouf who held off the competition to earn the first Snap On Mini-Mod victory of the 2010 season.

Ten pure stocks hit the track next for their 20-lap feature event.  Nicholas Erickson in the #65 started his season at State Park Speedway off the way he wanted crossing the start finish line in front of everyone else.

Despite just five cars in the Sportsman feature, it turned out to be one of the best races of the night.  The top four cars ran side by side for almost the entire 30-lap feature and there was even some late race drama between winner Scott Reidner and SPS regular Wayne Mackesy.

Mark Eswein claimed fast time for the super late models with Chris Wimmer right behind in second, but the feature was the Chris Weinkauf show.  Jeremy Lepak claimed the lead early in the 75-lap feature, but it didn’t take Weinkauf long to hunt down Lepak and claim the lead for himself.  Without looking back, Weinkauf’s #99 took the checkered flag just before fireworks lit up the Rib Mountain skies Thursday night.  Lepak held on for second, Keith Bohmsach finished third, Eswein worked his way forward to finish fourth, and Wimmer rounded out the top-five.
