State Park Speedway kicks off its 2017 season this Saturday when the ARCA Midwest Tour (ARCAMT) rolls into town. This marks the seventh straight year that Midwest touring series visits the Wausau, WI racetrack for the first race of the season.
“Having the ARCA Midwest Tour come for our opener has always been a huge success,” said State Park Speedway Owner Ron Wimmer. “They bring some of the best drivers in the Midwest and every year it’s been an exciting race. By now drivers and fans are anxious to get the season started and there’s no better way to do that than by bringing a big show to town to kick things off.”
Nearly 30 cars are pre-entered for the ARCA Midwest Tour Super Late Model Cabin Fever 100 Saturday night. While some heavy hitters in the Midwest, including Dan Fredrickson, Andrew Morrissey and Chris Weinkauf look to take the checkers, a few local names hope to rise to the occasion. Multi-time track champion Mark Mackesy won the inaugural Midwest Tour event at State Park Speedway and 2016 Super Late Model Rookie of the Year, Justin Mondeik, is running the full ARCAMT season and hopes this could be his breakout race.
“Opening up the season with the ARCAMT is exciting for us short track racers,” said Mackesy. “It’s like our Daytona 500 and it’s awesome that the track kicks the year off with the biggest race. I was fortunate enough to win one, but it’s not easy; hopefully we can get it done again this year.”
“Our team is very excited to have an event of this magnitude come to our home track,” said Mondeik. “We feel like this is our best opportunity for a breakout win, but we also are very aware of the stout entry list. The Cabin Fever 100 is a must see for all racing fans and we are expecting a great turnout.”
In addition to the Midwest Tour all other State Park Speedway divisions will be on track Saturday night as well. That includes the Budweiser Limited Late Models, Ropa’s Pizza Pure Stocks, Snap-On Mini-Mods, Motors Service and Supply Mini-Stocks and D&D Automotive Bandolero’s.
Fan gates will open at 3:30pm on Saturday, May 20th with Fred Mueller qualifying getting underway at 4:00pm. Racing is set to begin at 6:00pm with opening ceremonies taking place just prior to that. In case of inclement weather, the rain date for Saturday’s race will be Sunday, May 21st.
